You Were Not Alone

And you were not afraid…

When the hour is upon us
And our beauty surely gone
No, you will not be forgotten
And you will not be alone.
No, you will not be alone.

And when the day has all but ended
And our echo starts to fade
No, you will not be alone then
And you will not be afraid.
No, you will not be afraid.” *

My father died on this date in 2014. He was 3 weeks shy of his 92nd birthday.

He died of pancreatic cancer, but I never once heard him complain. In fact, I can’t remember hearing him complain at any point of his life. And his life wasn’t easy.

He did not die alone. His wife, aptly named “Hope,” had cared for him through the horrors of that cancer and the years before.

She had called me two weeks earlier to tell me it was time, and so I jumped on the first flight I found and joined her the next day, and we were there with him as he passed.

He was not afraid.

And he will not be forgotten.
