One of the reasons consolidation has hurt radio is that it has reduced the number of creative voices in every room.
When you continually hear that the only good ideas come from above you, why even both to share the ones you have?
Creatives are energized by autonomy, and we all blossom under the warmth of encouragement.
If radio was really interested in generating lots of new ways to meet our challenges they would do as this guy has. He awards a cash prize of $100,000 annually for the best idea from his employees.
Of course, a program like this also means the CEO and the executives at the very top, have to acknowledge that a great idea can come from anywhere.
And that’s not the way consolidated radio operates.
