Despite what you’ve been told
John Hegarty is an advertising icon. He’s written a book, “Hegarty on Creativity: There Are No Rules” which can be distilled into these 5 thoughts:
- Collaboration is great for sex, but not so much for creativity. GroupThink breeds blandness.
- Bollocks to failure. It happens. Get over it and move on.
- Nothing is original so strive for fresh instead. It’s how others respond to your ideas that count.
- Take your headphones off. Get outside your office and your building. Being creative means staying connected to the world around you.
- Like Paul McCartney, everyone needs his John Lennon, someone you trust who will challenge you, rather than always agreeing that you must be a genius whose every idea is a gem.
It strikes me that these 5 points absolutely apply to your job in Radio. If your company allows you the freedom to pay attention to these 5 thoughts, I think your product will be the better because of them.
