…
We cannot pretend we don’t know about all the damaged people out there.
Many are veterans with PTSD. We just celebrated another Veterans Day. Shouldn’t we honor them by providing the mental health support they need when they return from active duty?
I watched The Warfighters on the History Channel yesterday. Stories of Army Rangers and Navy Seals mainly, during the Iraq and Afghanistan Wars. Stories of unbelievable courage that left me humbled, in awe frankly.
So many of those men and women are still dealing with the wounds of those wars, not just physical, but mental. Too many have already taken their own lives out of desperation and despair.
We see them in every city in our nation. Often, they are homeless, self-medicating (meaning alcoholics and drug users), unemployed, without hope. They frighten us, these people who are at least partly responsible for our prosperity and peace.
So, we look away. We avert our gaze. Stare at our phone and hurry by as we pass them sitting on our streets.
Do we turn our backs on them and say, “You’re on your own. We can’t afford to help you.” Amazon needs government welfare more than you. Billionaires need tax breaks more than you need medical care and physical support.
Or …
Well, if we profess belief, perhaps we should follow HIS lead.
It’s never too late to do the right thing. Act now.
Help someone!
They need us. We owe them.
