…
I don’t like politics.
In fact, what I feel is closer to hate than mere dislike.
I don’t like the pandering, the constant contentiousness, the outright lies, the animosity and hate and division politicians have exacerbated in our country.
But, I’m wondering if American politics can teach us a lesson right now.
Clearly, the Democrat Party is fractured and unsure of how to regain momentum. Should they find compromise with Trump where they can or push all in on resistance?
I’m not sure. And honestly, I don’t even like to think about that most days.
But my point in bringing it up is that Trump did not water down his message to win his first Republican nomination for President in 2016.
He didn’t try to win over the Republican establishment by sounding like the other candidates for the nomination.
And, in our most recent Presidential election, he seemed to double-down on the invective. It worked, even if not as massively as he wants us to believe when he brags about his “mandate”.
So, should Democrats try to move further to the Right to appeal to what Trump calls “RINO’s”?
Or, would they be better off moving further to the Left to offer as clear a distinction to the Trump Party as they can? Further Left is where the passion lies: Bernie Sanders, AOC, et.al. but it may not be where most Dems are.
What does this have to do with your radio station?
Well, should you try to appeal to as broad an audience as you can, not really beloved by anyone but tolerated by most? That can work until a Power Pig shows up in your market.
Or, should you be clearly and instantly different from any other station you compete with?
In my experience, the more you try to be non-offensive, to be palatable to 100% of potential listeners in your town, the less passion any listener feels for your product, including the ones who already listen.
Is that the way to success?
Stern or Seacrest?
What say you?
