The Class of 2014

Go forth…

I was reminded, a few years ago, that I, too, was once young.

That I, too, once had no idea what I would do with my life.

That I, too, had chosen to major in one of the Humanities purely because I liked it, with not a thought of how it would translate into any sort of profession.

So, as the Class of 2014 begins what all parents call “real life,” a word from someone wiser and more talented than I, for both parent and graduate:

All that is gold does not glitter,
not all those who wander are lost;
the old that is strong does not wither,
deep roots are not reached by the frost.
From the ashes a fire shall be woken,
a light from the shadows shall spring;

renewed shall be the blade that was broken,
the crownless again shall be King.

~ J.R.R.Tolkien, The Lord of the Rings

The quest has always been to find ourselves, and almost any path can take us there.
