…
Yes, some people have advantages that you might not, like race, or the affluence of the family they are born into, or the nation where they live or the schools they attended.
But that doesn’t mean you can’t catch up.
There are basically 9 sources of advantage and tapping any one of them helps.
The 9:
- Raw talent and intelligence.
- Hard work.
- Differentiation.
- Process and Discipline.
- Talent Collector.
- Patience.
- The ability to endure pain.
- Temperament.
- Luck.
How many of those do you have or can you acquire?
Look, some people are just born more athletic and more brilliant than others and it feels to me that your temperament is something you’re born with too.
But any of us can choose to work harder, to look at problems and respond to challenges differently.
We can train ourselves to be more disciplined.
We can be self-confident enough to want to hire people who are smarter and more skilled than we are.
Patience is a learned skill, not a trait with which we’re born.
We can practice dealing with failure and feeling like an idiot in the quest to be better at anything we attempt. Failure is always part of learning a new skill.
Some seem luckier than others primarily because they prepare themselves before opportunity slaps them in the face.
So, you see, most of these qualities that are such a big part of success can be learned and practiced.
Now, get to work.
