Is This Fair?

It’s never been easier to put your music in front of millions of people.

YouTube and TikTok can create stars overnight when a post goes viral.

But the fact that millions of would-be musicians and artists post their stuff every day means it may be harder than ever for your individual song to be noticed.

In the old system, record companies would invest in artists and market their songs. Radio stations would play the songs that sold the most and the more times songs were played, the more the albums from which they came were sold.

And the more money the artist earned.

It’s different now.

Now, if you’re Taylor Swift or Drake or Nicki Minaj your songs are being streamed millions of times a day around the world.

But if you’re YOU, someone 99.99% of the world has never heard of, streaming isn’t likely to make writing and performing your own music a profitable experience.

THIS is how many times a song has to be streamed to count as one LP sale,

Spotify and Apple Music aren’t making stars of many new artists today.

And in the long run, that will be very bad for music and those of us who love it.
