Take this test…
You’ve always done it. You’re good at it. You love doing it. It’s not really work, it’s fun. It’s your passion.
But, for many, the choice is no longer theirs to make. Thousands have been displaced in our business over the past few years as a way to save money.
The business of our business has changed.
Thankfully, there are ways to help guide you to what you might do next if you are one of those who’ve been pushed out. Your skills and values can lead the way forward.
Dr. Heidi Grant Halvorson has written a book, FOCUS, that divides us into two basic groups. Some of us see our goals at work and in our lives as opportunities for advancement, achievement and rewards. We think about all we’ll gain when we succeed.
You’re good at innovation. You’re creative, work quickly, like risk, engage in abstract thinking and like to generate lots of ideas and options.
If this sounds like you, you have a “promotion focus.”
The rest of us are basically driven by a need for security. For this group, it’s all about not risking, or losing, everything. This type wants to fulfill responsibilities, not screw it up, and be dependable. You want to keep things running smoothly.
You’re great with details. You’re always thorough, like planning and lists, believe accuracy in your work is the measure of your ability, and you try to anticipate every problem that might arise. You’re analytical and reliable.
If this sounds like you, you have a “prevention focus.”
Wonder which group you’re in?
Each group has positives and negatives, so one is not more valuable than the other. They’re just different, as you and I are probably different.
Knowing your dominant focus can really help you evaluate the types of jobs that will reward you emotionally, and that almost always leads to financial rewards too. At the least it makes them less important.
