Are You Irreplaceable?

5 things you can do to make yourself irreplaceable…

I think a lot of us have hoped that as the massive consolidated radio groups collapse under the weight of their enormous debt, thing might get better in our local radio stations.

Based upon what we see with the Citadel model, I wouldn’t count on that.

Perhaps over-simplifying things, Citadel basically gets to walk away from its debt, leaving bond- and stock-holders with worthless paper, while the guys at the very top of the radio group just keep on keeping on.

I’m not even sure they’ve had their pay cut.

So, most of us are still in survival mode, which leads me to this question: What will you do this year to make yourself irreplaceable within your company?

This obviously requires some thought. It definitely requires a specific answer.

“Doing a good show everyday” is not a specific answer.

Sitting on the Board of Directors of your local Children’s Hospital or Homeless Shelter is.

Going on 50 sales calls to personally meet clients with one of your salespeople is.

Making 50 unpaid appearances within your local market is too.

I won’t list every idea, but you get the point.

Now is the perfect time to sit down and draft a document that lists specific things you will do in 2010 to broaden your reach, strengthen your personal brand, and help bring revenue into your organization.

  1. Be creative.
  2. Be specific.
  3. Be realistic — meaning actionable.
  4. Be local.
  5. Be relevant to your personal and company brand.

I’d love it if you would share your Action Plan once you get it done, and it will be really helpful to track progress as the year unfolds.
