A Great Facebook Strategy

This is how to use FB…

If you’re not a dog-lover, you probably didn’t watch the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show this week, which means you probably missed this:

It’s not new. I saw it last year, but this year, Purina added a twist.

A lot of companies try to entice me to “Like” their FB page by entering me in contests to win trips or cars or whatever, but that’s an intrusion into my friends’ lives.

These companies want me to junk up my feed artificially (I can do that fine on my own, thank you very much. Just ask my friends.) by appealing to my greed.

Worse yet, many companies offer extra entries into their contests if I will surrender my friends’ email addresses, or by begging them to “Like” the product too with “personalized” (meaning completely the opposite of authentic) messages.

Purina, on the other hand, understands how to get me to “Like” and visit their FB page without even asking.

They give me a chance to add my dog, Murphy — who is, of course, the most wonderful dog in the world — to this TV spot I love.

They appeal to the pride I feel for my pet, which I naturally want to share with those who know me best.

This is the right way to use Facebook.

Even the words of that song speak to how each of us feels about our dogs. They try to do what we ask them to do.

These words speak as we believe our dogs would, if they could.

They had me from the first image…
