The word has a very specific meaning, which is why it’s so powerful.

If we accept behavior that’s unacceptable, we’re compromising on something that we thought was too important to compromise on.

And that’s how we end up with the unacceptable becoming commonplace.

Those of us with sons would never tolerate them speaking this way.

We would demand any teacher acting this way be fired.

Yet we allow the President of our nation to use these words every single day.

We make excuses for his behavior, or we laugh and say he’s just being funny.

This is exactly how we got where we are today, with the unacceptable becoming commonplace, becoming acceptable.

Which doesn’t mean we can’t change it.
