If I Didn’t Know You Better

I would think that…

Understanding how we are perceived by those with whom we work has never been more important.

If you’re having any sort of interpersonal friction at your station, try this…

Ask several good friends to finish this sentence for you: “If I didn’t know you better, I would think that…”

I’ve found this works best if you use email for this. Few good friends will feel totally comfortable being brutally honest with you face-to-face.

If your good friends see you as different from your own image of yourself, you may have a clue about why those you work with, who do not know you as well, have issues with you.

The whole point is to find out how you’re perceived, how you come across to others most of the time.

And please understand that it is totally normal for others to see us differently than we see ourselves. It would be surprising if your close friends see you exactly as you see yourself.

So, have it.
